No. 8 Golden West Powers Past No. 9 Cerritos in Top-10 Showdown, 17–7
HUNTINGTON BEACH, Calif. - The No. 8 ranked Golden West College women's water polo team delivered a statement victory on Friday morning, defeating the No. 9 Cerritos College Falcons 17–7 in a matchup of top-10 programs at the Golden West Aquatics Complex.
The Rustlers (12–5, 1–2 OEC) wasted no time asserting control, holding a 6-2 lead in the opening quarter. Golden West maintained relentless offensive pressure throughout, extending its advantage to 10–4 at halftime and holding Cerritos scoreless in the third quarter to put the game out of reach.
Sophomore Sienna Abernathy led all scorers with a dominant seven-goal performance, setting the tone early with a first-quarter hat trick that fueled the Rustlers' 6–2 run. Hanna Menyhart added four goals, including a pair during Golden West's five-goal third quarter, while Sam O'Donnell and Mimi Versegi each netted three goals apiece.
In the cage, goalkeeper Camryn Adams was rock-solid once again, recording 11 saves over four quarters of play and anchoring a defense that held Cerritos scoreless for more than 12 consecutive minutes.
Cerritos (9–6) was led by Jasmine Escorcia and Monserrat Rodriguez, who each scored twice, while Isabella Ochoa, Ceci Ortiz-Miranda, and Eleonor Curiel tallied one goal apiece.
The Rustlers return to action on Wednesday, October 15, when they travel to face Saddleback College in an Orange Empire Conference matchup.
