Rustlers Blank Fullerton 5-0 Behind Arizmendi’s Gem in Conference Win
HUNTINGTON BEACH, Calif. — Behind a dominant complete-game shutout from Desyree Arizmendi and a balanced 11-hit attack, the Golden West College Rustlers shut out the Fullerton College Hornets 5-0 on Tuesday afternoon in Orange Empire Conference action.
With the victory, the Rustlers improve to 22-8 overall and 7-6 in conference play, climbing closer to the top of the standings, while the Hornets fall to 12-20 and 6-7 OEC.
Arizmendi (11-5) was lights out in the circle, tossing seven scoreless innings, allowing just three hits, walking one, and striking out seven. She faced just 26 batters and retired 14 of the final 16 she saw to seal the win.
Golden West wasted no time giving her run support. Abbie Rainwater sparked the offense from the leadoff spot, reaching base four times and scoring twice, including the game's first run on a first-inning RBI single by Lola Weber.
The Rustlers kept the pressure on in the second inning as Reggi Frei delivered a clutch two-run single to right-center, plating Rainwater and Mya Santiago to extend the lead to 3-0.
After a productive RBI groundout by Isabella Villegas in the third and an RBI double from Sara Aguilar in the fifth, Golden West had built a 5-0 cushion that Arizmendi would make stand.
Weber finished a perfect 3-for-3 with an RBI, while Rainwater went 3-for-3 with two stolen bases and two runs scored. Frei, Aguilar, and Santiago each added key hits in the effort, as the Rustlers played clean defense and didn't commit an error.
