Rainwater, Rustlers Rally Past Fullerton 7-3 to Cap Home Sweep

HUNTINGTON BEACH, Calif. — Golden West College continued its strong play in Orange Empire Conference action Friday, using late-inning offense and a complete-game effort from Desyree Arizmendi to top Fullerton College 7-3 and sweep the season series at home.
The Rustlers improved to 23-9 overall and 9-6 in OEC play, while the Hornets dropped to 13-21 and 7-8.
Abbie Rainwater led the way once again, going 3-for-4 with 3 runs scored, an RBI, and two stolen bases, sparking an offense that put up 10 hits and pulled away late with a three-run sixth inning.
Golden West grabbed an early 2-0 lead behind a Fullerton error in the first and an RBI infield single from Rainwater in the second. But the Hornets responded in the third with a two-run blast to left by Veronica Moore, tying the game. They took a brief 3-2 lead in the fourth after Juliana Ursino came around to score on a wild sequence involving a steal and a throwing error.
From there, it was all Rustlers.
In the fifth, Lola Weber doubled down the left field line to score Reggi Frei and Rainwater, giving GWC the lead back for good at 4-3. The sixth inning saw Rainwater swipe second, drawing a throw that allowed Mya Santiago to score. Moments later, Allyssa DeMayo ripped a two-run double to cap the scoring at 7-3.
Weber and DeMayo each collected 2 hits and 2 RBIs, while Frei reached base twice and scored twice.
In the circle, Arizmendi (12-6) went the distance, scattering six hits and allowing just two earned runs over seven innings. She struck out five and walked one to earn her second win of the week against the Hornets.
Golden West returns to action on Monday, April 21 when it travels to face Cypress College in another key conference matchup. First pitch is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
