No. 1 Golden West Hammers Canyons 58-14, Clinch Central League Title
HUNTINGTON BEACH – Newly state No. 1-ranked Golden West College is a win away from a perfect regular season after a 58-14 rout of visiting College of the Canyons on Saturday at Rustler Stadium.
The Rustlers' win, combined with a Fullerton College loss on Saturday night, wrapped up at least a share of the National Central League championship. Golden West improved to 9-0 overall and 6-0 in the Central League with just one game left to play before the postseason.
On Saturday, the Rustlers easily dispatched Canyons. The Rustlers jumped out to a 14-0 lead before the Cougars broke through the defense for a 58-yard touchdown run at the 2:09 mark in the first quarter.
Golden West took over from there, scoring 44 unanswered points. The Rustlers led 37-7 at halftime and was up 58-7 midway through the fourth when COC finally broke its scoring drought.
Golden West quarterback Kauna'oa Kamakawiwo'ole had another solid outing. He completed 11 of 14 passes for 107 yards with 3 touchdowns and no interceptions. He tossed TDs to Dom Thompson (26 yards), Tanner Schmidt (6 yards), and David Daniels (11 yards).
Noa Banua came in under center during the second half and connected with Thompson for his second touchdown reception, this time for 67 yards. Thompson ended the game with 3 catches for 105 yards.
The Rustlers got rushing touchdowns from Aaron Mitchell (1 yard), Ardwon Morris (25 yards), and Kalen Montgomery (6 yards). Mattheo Zavala nailed a 32-yards field goal and the Rustlers' defense got in on the scoring with a 26-yard interception return for a touchdown by Brandon Soleau.
Golden West will look to wrap up the season 10-0 as well as strengthen its case for the top seed in the Southern California Playoffs next Saturday (Nov. 8) when the Rustlers travel to Fullerton for a 12 p.m. game.
