Men's Volleyball is No. 1 in Pacific Coast CCCAA Conference
No.1 Golden West served the formally No. 2 Grossmont their first loss in conference play, to seal Golden West top spot for another week.
Huntington Beach, Calif. - No.1 Golden West served the formally No. 2 Grossmont their first loss in conference play, to seal Golden West top spot for another week. Irvine Valley has since moved into the No. 2 spot with a (3-1) conference record, dropping Grossmont down to No. 4. The Rustlers (8-2, 5-0) defeated the Griffins (5-5, 2-1) 3-1, the match scores were (20-25, 27-25, 25-20, 25-20).
Leading Golden West for the night was Matt Hilling with 23 kills, Jose Ulloa who put up a pair of solo blocks and Kevin Gorence with 9 digs.
In the opening set, the tension was palatable between the two rival teams. The Rustlers paced the Griffins in points, never allowing one team to dominate the score board. At the end of the first set it was Grossmont's win, but it was Golden West's motivation to turn up the heat.
The second set saw consecutive points for Grossmont, but a mid-set rally from the Rustlers pushed them ahead, and took the set to 27 points for the win.
Golden West needed little else to clinch the win, and after the first 2 sets taking more than an hour, the Rustlers made quick work of the final 2 sets.
The men return to the court Friday to play the newly ranked No. 2 team Irvine Valley. Game time is at 6:00pm.
