Rustlers Sweep Pirates to Claim Conference Title, Top Playoff Seed
Huntington Beach, Calif. - In a conference championship showdown, the #2 ranked Golden West College Rustlers delivered a dominant performance to sweep the #1 Orange Coast College Pirates 3-0 (25-18, 25-16, 25-20) and secure the conference title along with the coveted #1 seed in the upcoming 3C2A playoffs.
The Rustlers (20-2, 12-2) brought the heat from the opening serve, combining explosive offense with suffocating defense to avenge an early-season loss to the Pirates (20-3, 12-2) and earn the crucial head-to-head tiebreaker atop the conference standings.
Golden West hit a scorching .383 as a team, while holding Orange Coast to .188, including a rough .088 in the second set. The Rustlers were led by Aidan Powell, who was virtually unstoppable with 14 kills on .520 hitting, 11 digs, and 3 aces — good for a match-high 18.5 points.
Kai Rodriguez followed with a near-flawless offensive outing, racking up 9 kills on .562 hitting and adding 9 digs. Owen Banner chipped in 6 kills and 3 block assists, while Aidan Dubno added 3 kills and 3 blocks of his own to help control the net.
The dual-setting tandem of John Braunstein (21 assists) and Jay Pearson (11 assists) kept the Pirates' defense scrambling all night, distributing the ball with precision to a balanced attack.
Golden West also dominated at the net, tallying 20 block assists as a team, while libero Joseph Nunez anchored the back row with 9 digs and 2 aces.
Despite a strong individual effort from Orange Coast's Noah Keelin (12 kills, .241) and Jacob Surette (9 kills, .412), the Pirates couldn't generate consistent offense against the Rustlers' pressure. Golden West's aggressive serving led to 13 service errors by OCC and limited their rhythm throughout the match.
With the win, Golden West caps the regular season on a high note, with the conference title but also the top seed heading into the 3C2A State Playoffs, thanks to their head-to-head sweep of the Pirates.
The Rustlers will now look to ride their momentum into postseason play as they chase a state title starting Friday, April 18th against # 8 seeded Santa Monica College at home at 6pm.
