Golden West Splits Home Doubleheader Against Cypress and Orange Coast

HUNTINGTON BEACH, Calif. — The Golden West College Rustlers beach volleyball team battled through a pair of competitive matchups at home, earning a 3-2 win over Cypress College before falling to Orange Coast College 4-1 on a brisk afternoon of action.

The Rustlers came out strong against the visiting Chargers, securing three key pair victories to earn the match win.

• No. 1 Pair – Hayden Johnston / Maren Matthews set the tone with a confident 21-14, 21-14 sweep of Zoe Ziegler and Keilyn Flores.

• No. 2 Pair – Jenna Zaffino / Cassandra Zoellers dropped their match in straight sets, falling 17-21, 11-21.

• No. 3 Pair – Jalissa Costa / Elyse Varipapa dominated early and held on in a tight second set to win 21-8, 21-19.

• No. 4 Pair – Lola Larson / Fabiana Padilla pushed their match to three sets but ultimately fell in a nail-biter, 21-14, 13-21, 10-15.

• No. 5 Pair – Trinity Webber / Keely Larson clinched the match for GWC with a strong 21-17, 21-19 victory over Kaylin Hanley and Sydney Jackson.

Orange Coast 4, Golden West 1

The Rustlers faced a tough test against a deep Orange Coast squad, dropping four of five matches despite strong performances.

• No. 1 Pair – Johnston and Matthews battled but dropped their match 17-21, 17-21 to K. Ihring and J. Packey.

• No. 2 Pair – Zaffino and Zoellers picked up the lone Rustler win, outlasting B. Bowman and L. Fernstein in a tight 24-22, 21-11 decision.

• No. 3 Pair – Costa and Varipapa dropped their match in straight sets, falling 16-21, 16-21.

• No. 4 Pair – L. Larson and Padilla fell in straight sets, 16-21, 15-21.

• No. 5 Pair – Webber and K. Larson lost 17-21, 7-21 to A. Couch and R. Anderson.
