Golden West Beach Volleyball Sends Two Pairs to SoCal Regional Pairs Championship
HUNTINGTON BEACH, CA — The Golden West College beach volleyball program will be well represented this weekend as two Rustler pairs prepare to compete at the 3C2A Southern California Regional Pairs Championship, hosted by El Camino College on May 1–2.
Leading the way for Golden West is the No. 1 pair of Maren Matthews and Meghan Freck, who enter the tournament as the Orange Empire Conference (OEC) No. 2 seed. The duo has been a cornerstone of the Rustlers' success this season and will open play against Saddleback College's Meg Gardner and Keelyn Lopez, the OEC No. 9 seed.
Matthews and Freck have consistently performed at a high level throughout the spring, combining strong net play with defensive consistency as they look to make a deep run in the 32-team regional field.
Golden West's No. 2 pair of Mackenzie Dorney and Jenna Zaffino also earned a strong position in the bracket, qualifying as the OEC No. 4 seed. The pair will begin their tournament run against MiraCosta College's Gwen Mitchell and Kylie Osbourne in what is expected to be a competitive opening-round matchup.
Dorney and Zaffino have been a reliable force in the Rustlers' lineup all season, showing the ability to win both in straight sets and in tight three-set battles.
The Southern California Regional Pairs Championship features the top duos from across the region and serves as a qualifier for the 3C2A State Pairs Championship.
First serve is scheduled for Friday morning at El Camino College, with action continuing through Saturday's final rounds.
