HUNTINGTON BEACH, Calif. — The Golden West College women's soccer team is moving on in the postseason. The No. 12–seeded Rustlers earned a 2–0 shutout victory over No. 21 West LA College on Wednesday afternoon in the SoCal Regional First Round, securing their place in Saturday's second round.
With the win, Golden West improves to 12-4-6 and advances to face No. 5 seed College of the Canyons on Saturday, November 22 at 5 p.m. in Santa Clarita.
Golden West set the tone early, dominating possession and creating steady pressure in the attacking third. The breakthrough came in the 24th minute, when Jocelyn Heredia curled home the opening goal off a perfect setup from Sarah Aguilar, giving the Rustlers a 1–0 lead they carried into halftime.
In the second half, Golden West continued to dictate play and doubled its advantage in the 65th minute. Midfielder Kaydee Santiago pounced on a loose ball at the top of the box and buried an unassisted strike, giving the Rustlers the insurance goal they needed and her first score of the postseason.
The Rustlers generated 15 total shots, with players like Alexandra Ortenzo, Kaylee Gomez, and Heredia consistently applying pressure to the Cougars' back line.
On the defensive side, Golden West showcased the same lockdown performance that helped carry them through the regular season. Sophomore goalkeeper Sierra Carter finished with two saves, earning her 10th shutout of the year and keeping the Cougars' limited chances off the scoreboard.
Golden West now turns its attention to a major road test as they travel to face the No. 5 College of the Canyons Cougars in the SoCal Regional Second Round.
