RUSTLERS TAKE DOWN UNDEFEATED FOLSOM LAKE IN PENALTY SHOOTOUT, ADVANCE TO 3C2A STATE CHAMPIONSHIP GAME
MISSION VIEJO, Calif. — The Golden West College women's soccer team continues its storybook postseason run, defeating undefeated and two-time defending state champion Folsom Lake College in a dramatic 4–2 penalty shootout after 120 minutes of scoreless soccer in the 3C2A State Championship Semifinals at Saddleback College.
With the victory, the Rustlers (15-4-7) advance to the 3C2A State Championship Game for the first time in program history, where they will face Sierra College on Sunday, December 7 at 10 a.m.
Entering their first ever state championship final four, Golden West showed immediately they belonged on the state stage. The Rustlers matched the Falcons stride for stride in the opening half, limiting opportunities on both ends while edging Folsom Lake in first-half shots, 3–2.
The defending champions surged in the second half, firing 11 shots and applying constant pressure, but Golden West goalkeeper Mia Cook was flawless. The freshman came up with multiple clutch saves, turning aside every Falcon chance to keep the match deadlocked and force overtime.
The first extra period remained cautious, with each side registering only one shot. The second overtime opened up as both teams looked for the late winner. The best chance of the match belonged to Golden West when sophomore Kaylee Gomez rose above the defense and headed a ball off the crossbar in the 118th minute — inches away from sending the Rustlers directly to the final. Instead, the battle marched to penalty kicks.
Folsom Lake struck first in the shootout, but the Rustlers answered immediately through Kiersten Mahan, who buried her shot into the right side netting.
Golden West grabbed momentum in round two when a Falcon attempt sailed wide, and Jada Overton converted to give the Rustlers a 2–1 lead.
Both teams scored in the third round, with Giana Ortenzo calmly slotting her finish to keep Golden West ahead 3–2.
The pivotal moment came in round four. Folsom Lake's shot was denied by Mia Cook, who delivered one of the biggest saves in program history. With a chance to clinch a spot in the state final, Amelia Villegas stepped forward and buried her penalty into the right side of the net and sealing a 4–2 shootout victory and igniting the Rustler celebration.
Golden West's postseason journey has now included back-to-back victories over No. 1 seeds, first defeating top-ranked Saddleback College 1–0 in the SoCal Regional Final, and now knocking out unbeaten Folsom Lake (22-0-3) — the two-time defending state champions.
The Rustlers will now play for their first state title in program history.
