HUNTINGTON BEACH, Calif. – The Golden West College women's volleyball team opened Orange Empire Conference play in dramatic fashion, grinding out a five-set victory over Cypress College, 22-25, 28-26, 25-16, 24-26, 15-13, on Friday night inside the GWC Gym. With the win, the Rustlers improve to 5-1 overall and 1-0 in OEC action and Cypress falls to 3-8 overall and 0-1 in OEC action.
Cypress struck first, edging out the Rustlers in the opening set 25-22, before Golden West answered in a back-and-forth second set that saw extra points, 28-26. The Rustlers carried that momentum into the third, dominating 25-16 behind sharp serving and balanced hitting.
The Chargers refused to go away, however, rallying late to take the fourth set 26-24 and forcing a decisive fifth. In the final frame, the Rustlers jumped out to an early lead and held off a late Cypress push, sealing the match 15-13.
Golden West continues Orange Empire Conference play next week when they travel to face Saddleback College.
