Huntington Beach, Calif. – The Golden West College women's volleyball team put on a dominant performance Wednesday night inside the GWC Gym, sweeping the Irvine Valley College Lasers in straight sets (25-11, 25-11, 25-22) to notch their third Orange Empire Conference (OEC) win of the season. With the victory, the Rustlers improve to 7-2 overall and 3-1 in OEC play.
Golden West was sharp from the opening serve, hitting an impressive .364 in the first set and .474 in the second, limiting Irvine Valley to just 11 points in each frame. The Lasers battled in the third set, but the Rustlers' balanced attack proved too much, closing out the match with a decisive 25-22 finish.
Sophomore Jenna Zaffino led the way with 12 kills on .455 hitting while adding two aces and 10 digs for a match-high 14.5 points. Jalissa Costa was equally effective, putting down 11 kills at a .370 clip and contributing 15 points overall. Lizbeth Espinoza (4 kills, .500) and Lesly Perez (3 kills, .750) added efficiency at the net, while setter Cassandra Zoellers orchestrated the offense with 21 assists and three service aces.
As a team, Golden West hit a blistering .386, recorded 10 service aces, and held Irvine Valley to just a .125 hitting percentage across three sets. The Rustlers also collected 37 digs, led by Zaffino and libero Annalee Smith (12 digs).
The Rustlers return to action Friday night when they travel to Fullerton College in another OEC showdown. First serve is scheduled for 6:00 p.m.
