HUNTINGTON BEACH, Calif. – The Golden West College women's volleyball team continued their strong start to Orange Empire Conference play with a dominant three-set sweep over Santa Ana College on Wednesday night inside the GWC Gym. The Rustlers rolled to a 25-14, 25-12, 25-21 victory to improve to 6-1 overall and 2-0 in conference action.
Golden West wasted no time setting the tone, hitting .250 in the opening set while forcing Santa Ana into negative attacking numbers. The Rustlers kept their foot on the gas in the second frame with their most efficient offensive performance of the night, posting a .280 hitting percentage on 11 kills. In the third, Golden West held off a late push from the Dons to seal the sweep with a 25-21 win.
Sophomore outside hitter Jalissa Costa powered the Rustlers with 13 kills on a .320 hitting clip, adding 14 digs for a double-double. Jenna Zaffino was also a force at the net with 12 kills and 11 digs, while Sorelle Buley chipped in four kills and a block. Setter Cassandra Zoellers ran the offense with 15 assists, and libero Lizbeth Espinoza anchored the back row with a team-high 11 digs.
As a team, Golden West hit .235 on the night while out-digging Santa Ana 62-42 and controlling the net with 12 team blocks.
Golden West looks to keep its momentum rolling when the Rustlers continue OEC play on the road Friday at Saddleback College with a 6pm start.
